How to select the swim events: Please talk to your coach. He/she will share how your child is doing with the variety of swimming techniques and yardage. Each child advances at their own pace. We want all our swimmers to have a positive experience. Also, if the coach is aware of what your swimmer is signed up for, he/she can help your swimmer with specific pointers for their competition.
What to wear for the swim meet: Unlike regular swimsuits, which are designed mainly for the aesthetic appearances, swimsuits designed to be worn during competitions are manufactured to assist the athlete in swim competitions. They reduce friction and drag in the water, increasing the efficiency of the swimmer's forward motion. The tight fits allow for easy movement and are said to reduce muscle vibration, thus reducing drag. Most competitive swimmers also wear special swimsuits including partial bodysuits, racerback styles, jammers and racing briefs to assist their glide through the water thus gaining a speed advantage. Please ensure that the jammers are snug on your boy.
When should you arrive at the meet: Each meet has a slightly different starting time. Please ensure that you are aware of the starting time when you register for each meet. Warm-ups with the coach are about an 30-45 minutes before the starting time of the meet. If your child does not sing-in at the start of the meet, they will be taken out of the competition. This is because the officials take role and use this information to assign a diving block to each child on the day of the meet.
What to pack for the swim meet: It's always good to pack extra goggles and swim cap. Some swimmers go through these faster than others. Most meets sell these items as well. A parka, coat, or extra towels are also a good idea to bring. There are concession stands at each meet. Camping chairs, snacks and a canopy would be nice to have. Many parents also take some of these items with them and are more than happy to share. Last, sunscreen is another essential item.
